A long term solution for this is required, and with the savings projected from the new health care bill and that will accrue from preventive care to millions of Americans, a solution can be reached in the next Congress.

A significant problem in the Medicare system has been addressed in the new health care bill, and regulations to strenghten enforcement have just been promulgated for review. In addition a bi-partisan bill just passed the House which will bar corporations and individuals who are found guilty of fraud from ever participating in the future. I support these efforts, as seniors have long noted cases where their Medicare bills contained over-billing, as good steps to correcting a problem which has been estimated to cost over $50 billion a year.

The Social Security System and Trust Fund are adequately funded for the immediate future. Under worse case scenarios developed by the Trust Fund administrators, the fund is adequate to pay all benefits until 2038, perhaps much longer. Only minor changes may be required, such as raising the limit for contributions, in the coming years. The Trust Fund, and its maintenance, are not part of our fiscal challenge of the total national debt, or current deficits. To suggest otherwise is misleading, and to politicize it does the country a great disservice.

A $1.9 million federal stimulus grant to retro-fit Greenville schools with energy-saving equipment will pay for itself in about two years.

“In addition to installing such things as cooling towers, heat recovery systems and more efficient lighting, the money is paying the salary of two energy managers, whose job is to go through the schools at night and on weekends and find waste.
They have already found $500,000 in squandered energy in the four months they have been on the job – more than covering the cost of their salaries, according to Bryan Morris, the district’s facilities director.”
